This isn't really a website recommendation (though there is a website associated with it), but anyone in any doubt as to whether or not to go out and buy the Jetlag Travel Guide to Molvania should cast aside those hesitations right away and purchase it immediately. It's very funny. Anyone looking at massage broads like this ought to like it.

Thanks for that, Al.

I saw the book advertised in Finsbury Park tube and thought it might be a good candidate for the Editor's Book Choice on the front page of attitude Travel, after I take down George Monbiot's rather fantastic The Age of Consent.

In the meantime, there is some more information about the book, here:

Molvania: A Land Untouched by Modern Dentistry (a Jetlag travel guide)

Have you read it from cover to cover then?

Can you, without spoiling it, give us a few tasters?

I read it from cover to cover, literally, within the space a few hours yesterday afternoon, it was that good. Tasters? Well, one or two won't spoil it...

p. 25

St Fyodor -Patron Saint of Molvania [AD1507-1563]

.... Such was St Fyodor's devotion to the Lord that, at the age of 21, he announced he'd been called to give up all movement. As part of his devotion he would sit by the fire in quiet contemplation for months on end, taking no nourishment save three meals a day plus snacks. At other times he would disappear for long periods without explanation, returning from his devotions with slurred speech and unsteady gait -a sign, he claimed, that the Holy Spirit was dwelling within.

p. 76

In the 15th century, Vajana was called Molvania's 'cultural melting pot' as it had a large melting pot into which ethnic minorities were thrown during the Balkan Inquisition.

p. 79

In summer the Vajana University's dormitories are fumigated and opened up to visitors, providing a cheap alternative to hotels. Good value and hearty meals are also served in a temporary cafeteria set up at the rear of the university's veterinary school.

p. 98 (NB -Molvania sided with the Nazis in WWII)

A Survivor's Tale...

For many people, Bardjov will forever be associated with the remarkable story of Lt Vladko, a Molvanian soldier who, in 1945, was found by Russian soldiers in the forest south of this remote village. Thinking World War II was still going, Vladko gave himself up to his captors. It was still going, and he was shot for collaborating with the enemy

That doesn't really do the book justice, but it's a taster.

ROFLMAO

I liked the Veterinary School Cafeteria quote the best.

Maybe we should have an extra folder here for reviews of travel, language and international politics related books, guidebooks, travelogues etc.

What do you think?
