Has anyone here travelled on megatrain?
Can you get off in the middle of a route, or do they lock the doors? |

One of my friends at SSEES has at least once, maybe a couple of times. I don't think she has ever said very much about it though, one way or the other.

The megatrain FAQ states:
| Quote: | My reservation states the main terminus; can I board elsewhere?
Please note that the departure and arrival times displayed are for the main terminus points you selected. You must board and alight at these points, and it is a condition of travel on megatrain that you may not board or alight at other points on the route. If travelling on services operated by Virgin Trains, you will be charged the full single fare for the actual journey made. On services operated by South West trains Penalty fares will apply if passengers alight or board at other points along the route.
Why can't I get on or off the train at intermediate stations?
megatrain is a simple low-cost inter-city fare like the successful megabus which has been run by Stagecoach for over two years. It is not expected to be highly profitable and must attract a good number of new customers to justify itself. In order to do that, it needs to be kept simple for passengers booking and simple for our staff to implement and monitor. Therefore, megatrain is only being offered on lightly loaded trains and between certain origins and destinations only. Should the extension of the initial megatrain routes prove popular with our passengers, we may extend to offer to more places. |

| Yes. But how would they be able to tell without physically locking the doors? |

I guess because when you get off the train you will have to pass through electronic ticket gates and if you go to the guard and show him your megatrain code he's not going to be happy to see you. _________________ Alan Lansdowne

But many stations in Britain don't have electronic ticket gates. Dorchester doesn't, for example, unless things have changed.

I don't know how many of them do or not now.
I know Brighton does, I can't remember if Sheffield does or not - but Bristol does, and it never used to. _________________ Alan Lansdowne

Alsky, I don't know about this.. they're obviously trying to discourage people from jumping off mid-route with "penalty fares" and what-not... I don't know if they are competent enough to enforce that rule. (We both know discouragement is not the same as enforcement). The tricky thing is, you won't know either until you get to Dorchester station, right? _________________ Alan Lansdowne

| Well, true. I did ask them, but I haven't received a reply. Of course, I didn't realise they did this until I'd bought the ticket. Had I known I'd have just got one to Poole. In fact, I've been trying to amend the ticket, but their system's not working and they haven't sent me the code you need to do so. |

But is it possible, in principle, to change the destination? _________________ Alan Lansdowne

| Well, it should be. If there's a special megatrain carriage, I suppose what I could do if it does turn out they're locking people in, is get out at Poole, go into a normal carriage, and pay the single fare to Dorchester if asked. |

I don't think they lock people into the megatrain carriage. I think all the security takes place on the platform and at the ticket gates etc.
You may well find that Dorchester now has gates even though it didn't used to. _________________ Alan Lansdowne
